Imagine
Ce biografie are femeia asta!

Dramatic start to transatlantic race as yachts collide in Plymouth Sound
By PHILIP BOWERN

On board HMS Somerset

Gusting winds and a heavy swell made for an exciting start yesterday as the 17 yachts in the Original Singlehanded Transatlantic yacht race (OSTAR) left Plymouth Sound on the 3,000-mile journey to Newport, Rhode Island.

Even before Plymouth Lord Mayor, Councillor Mrs Vivien Pengelly, fired the ceremonial starting gun aboard the Devonport-based frigate HMS Somerset, one of the competitors had run into trouble with a loss of steering hydraulic fluid and had to be towed to safety. And just seconds after the start, at noon, two vessels collided, although no serious damage was caused.

The race, the 14th OSTAR since the event began in 1960, finally got away with 16 starters. The fastest boats could be passing the finish line on America's eastern seaboard in a little over two weeks.

The only woman competitor, Polish born Asia Pajkowska, in her catamaran Cabrio 2, had to be towed into port for repairs but will set off again today. The other drama involved Devon pub landlord Peter Crowther, in Suomi Kudu, who touched hulls with Italian Andrea Mura in the highly fancied Open 50 Vento Di Sardegna as the vessels jostled for position at the start line, inside the Plymouth breakwater.

Mr Crowther, of the Green Dragon pub at Stoke Fleming, near Dartmouth, is a veteran of eight previous OSTARs. Seasoned yachtsmen, watching the drama unfold from the deck of HMS Somerset, disagreed about whether the Devonian or the Italian were to blame for the collision.

OSTAR race director David Southwood said the weather had been challenging for the start and would get worse before it got better. "I wouldn't be surprised if one or two have a difficult night and it might make them wonder if they are ready for a crossing of the Atlantic," he said. Last night one of the smallest vessels in the race, Lexia, was taking shelter in the Yealm estuary and will set off again today. A second, Anarchy, has retired.

Once the weather front passes through, however, the forecast looks more favourable. "For most of these boats, the winds are perfectly manageable going through the rest of the week," said David.

He said that with 3,000 miles to go there was no need to be jockeying for position at the start. "The excitement mounts and they get carried away – that's why there was a collision" he said. "They will get out past the Eddystone lighthouse and then head off towards The Lizard. It will be lively, but once they get a few days in, the weather will be calming down again."

Among the party on board HMS Somerset was Commodore Norman Bailey of the Newport Yacht Club who will be back in the United States to welcome the crews home. Mr Southwood – organising his second OSTAR in a row after directing the 2009 event – will also be at the finish line.

The OSTAR was the brainchild of military hero Blondie Hasler, and competitors in the first race, in 1960, included Sir Francis Chichester.
