In concluzie: daca tot zboara, lasa-i sa le puna si eleroane, :)

An inquiry by the Measurement Committee and International Jury on modifications that ORACLE TEAM USA made to their AC45 yachts in 2012 ended today with a report issued by the International Jury.

Three team members have been excluded from participating in the regatta. The team has also been deducted two points from its score in the upcoming America’s Cup Finals beginning September 7. They have also been fined US$250,000.

In August the team voluntarily withdrew retroactively from the 2012/2013 AC45 regattas in question.

The International Jury confirmed that only a handful of individuals were involved, and that all members of senior management of ORACLE TEAM USA — including skippers Jimmy Spithill and Ben Ainslie, CEO Russell Coutts, General Manager Grant Simmer and Shore Team Director Mark Turner— were not aware or involved in any way.

To win the America’s Cup, a team must score nine points, the highest ever number in the competition’s 162 year-old history.

The defender now starts with a deficit score of minus-2 and must win 11 races to retain the trophy. Emirates Team New Zealand, the challenger, is unaffected and must win 9 races as before.

The highly anticipated 34th America's Cup "September Showdown" between Dean Barker, skipper of challenger Emirates Team New Zealand, and Jimmy Spithill, skipper of ORACLE TEAM USA, begins Saturday, September 7th with two races at 1:10pm and 2:10pm Pacific Time.

The race series continues on Sunday the 8th, Tuesday the 10th, Thursday the 12th, Saturday the 14th, and, if necessary the subsequent Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday — each with two races per day at 1:10pm and 2:10pm.

The full International Jury decision can be found under Jury Notices on the America’s Cup Official Race Noticeboard.

Un articol frumos despre tactica, volte si in general nivelul la care a ajuns CA.

Imagine

Why Glenn Ashby, not John Kostecki, is the real root of Oracle Team USA's problems.
September 11, 2013

John Kostecki's absence from the America's Cup press conference yesterday fired up the rumour mill to maximum output in and around the San Francisco race village as pundits, fans and even my local taxi driver speculated whether Kostecki had sailed his last race in the 34th America's Cup.

Was Kostecki not there because he had already been given the 'big ease' from his role as tactician? Probably not at that stage; more likely he was been saved the death by a thousand paper cuts of having to explain to the media circus his decision to try a high risk foiling tack maneuver at the leeward gate when a simpler safer solution would have sufficed.

The Oracle crew made a massive hash of the turn and dropped so much boatspeed that watching on the TV it seemed like they had ground to a halt. Of course they hadn't, but when your opposition is screaming in at 35 knots or more the effect is pretty much the same.

Kostecki's tactical call has bemused expert and newbie sailing fans alike. Why go for the AC72 equivalent of a triple back summersault with a pike twist when a simple straight forward swan dive would have got the job done?

Or to put it another way: when you are late for an important meeting and you suddenly realise you are about to pass the freeway exit at 70 mile per hour, do you sacrifice the few precious minutes it will take to go to the next junction and turn round, or do you risk a high speed swerve which you might pull off but will more likely leave you upside down in a ditch?

Racing sailors will understand that JK wanted the right on the early part of the beat to make the most of the tidal relief from Alcatraz Island. Kiwi tactician Ray Davies later told me that had the American boat opted for the safer stand on and then tack rounding, he would have called for a foiling tack inside them. But then perhaps Davies would have a higher level of confidence that the men standing in front of him would be able to pull it off.

It's still not clear who made the call to play Oracle's postponement card before the start of the second of yesterday's races. Their helmsman James Spithill - who is obliged under the rules to attend the press conference, but said he wouldn't have if he didn't have too - gave the stock that it was "a team decision". He was equally evasive about the conversation that went on aboard the Oracle tender between him and team CEO Russell Coutts: "We were just chatting about the weather," he said with a smirk.

This morning the rumour mill was still rattling away at full tilt with "very reliable sources" suggesting that Kostecki is out and British Olympic sailing hero Sir Ben Ainslie was in. That story would make for great copy and would most likely galvanise a whole nation of sailing fans in the UK, but would it really help Larry Ellison's team dig its way out of one of the biggest America's Cup final holes in the history of the event? Unlikely, in my opinion.

Kostecki's call and the whole crew's ability to pull off the foiling tack at mark two undoubtedly cost Oracle that race. In fact, even if they had managed to get round in good shape, the Kiwi's superior upwind speed would have seen them leading at the next mark. If Oracle could have rounded close behind them and demonstrated the same speed advantage as they had on the initial downwind leg then we could have had a battle royal on the way to the final turn mark and the finish. Win or lose, we would not have been talking about crew changes afterwards; we would have been talking about the real root of Oracle's problems: what they can do to match the Kiwi's upwind performance?

Unfortunately for them, the answer to that question is, not much. I say that because the real key to Emirates Team New Zealand's blistering upwind speed is not about foils, or wing design (well maybe a bit) - it's actually the sublime skills of their wing trimmer Glen Ashby who can literally make the huge solid sail do whatever he wants.

On that second beat yesterday it was Ashby's silky skills on the four hydraulic pedals, buttons and mainsheet which helped the Kiwi boat switch into hyperspace mode in winds which Davies told me reached 27 knots in the middle section of the beat.

The Oracle Team USA crew simply had no answer for Ashby's ability and no amount of tactician changes is going to address that problem.
[UPDATE: Shortly after posting this story we spotted this image of Ben Ainslie in John Kostecki's place while Oracle team USA were out training today on San Francisco Bay. Not official confirmation of a change by any means as Kostecki might merely have needed a day on the therapist's couch. Oracle can wait until tomorrow morning at around nine before making any official notification of their crew list.]
